She's a girl from the boogie-down Bronx weaned on the Sugarhill Gang and Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. You can just picture Jennifer Lopez
singing along to "All Cried Out" before she rode the Lexington Avenue Line to superstardom. Her stops along the way: a Flygirl dancer
on TV's "In Living Color." Her supercharged, high-profile role (which earned her a dark-horse Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress) in "Selena." Indie admiration with "My Family/Mi Familia." A crossover critical knockout with "Out of Sight." And now, a major-label deal with Sony for her first album,
"On the 6."
Luckily for Lopez, her debut is perfectly timed with the ever-peaking wave that is this year's Latin pop crossover phenomenon. And she's amassed a daunting array of
collaborators, including Sean "Puffy" Combs, Latin superstar (and the only bright light in Paul Simon's "The Capeman") Marc Anthony, Emilio and Gloria Estefan, and trailblazing
producer/songwriters the Trackmasters and Rodney Jerkins.
And it doesn't hurt (nor is it surprising) that she's quite videogenic as well.
MusicMania Team Connelly recently chatted with Jennifer Lopez
in the recording studio about "On the 6." They talked about her cast of collaborators, her first crack at songwriting, the universal appeal of Ricky Martin
, and all those pesky rumors about her private life.
